Egyptian archaeology skills school, The Egypt Exploration Society, London
Hands-on activity

Over recent years the Egypt Exploration Society has strived to promote the professional development of students across the world by providing scholarships to visiting Egyptian researchers, fellowships in Egypt, grants for familiarisation tours, and internships in the London office. All of these have served to help students begin their journey into the field of Egyptology, providing training and networking opportunities with experts in the discipline. This skills school is something we felt has been missing so far, but will provide an initial step towards further opportunities in particular the Society’s long-running Centenary Award.
For many students, experience at local excavations in the UK and Europe are not adequate preparation for excavating in Egypt, as the organisation of an excavation – including the duties of the team members and current political situations – differs greatly. However, procuring a placement, time, and funds to participate on an excavation in Egypt is sometimes very difficult for students who are engrossed in their post-graduate studies. This course was developed as a more affordable way to introduce students to the types of skills they will be expected to have on excavation in Egypt. Whilst the course cannot replace the experience field work training provides for students, we hope it will serve as an introduction, during which students can see if they have an aptitude for particular parts of the work. From there, students may choose to pursue more dedicated training in a specific area, which can be discussed with the greatly experienced archaeologist lecturers.
This course is for anyone currently undertaking an undergraduate or postgraduate degree in Egyptology, or related discipline, or within five years of having been awarded their degree and will run from 24th–28th July 2017 at the EES London Office. Each day will have a 3-hour morning and afternoon session which focuses on a different skill set used in excavation. Spaces are strictly limited to ten places to allow for maximum engagement with the lecturers and the provision of practical activities throughout the week. Registration is on a first-come, first-served basis.
